Is it worth going to a curl specialist?

Let's face it there's rarely a curly person that hasn't had some sort of issue with a haircut over the years. From uneven lengths to weird shapes and let's not forget those times your hair is dried to reveal a rather undesirable length. But why do standard hairdressing techniques miss the mark and what can you do about it?
First we need to start with how hair is cut.
Traditionally the hair is washed and cut at different angles whilst wet to ensure the cut sits balanced around the head and to the desired shape. We cross check the hair to ensure the hair is the same length. When layering the cut, guides are made so the hair can join up with different sections, this is usually from the back to the front.

So what happens when curly hair is cut this way?
Well, its not necessarily the cut itself, all cut hair when wet will look right, the problem is when the hair is dried.
Those beautiful layers swooping down as a face frame when wet don't take into consideration the volume that curly hair has once dried. This might look like spaniel ears or heavy blocks... I myself have had a cut that resembled a bow on the top of my head!
What about the length?
As you can imagine curly hair bounces! An inch to straight hair will look like 5mm of curly hair, its not that your hairdresser is scissor happy its that they don't understand how much bounce potential your hair actually has, and thats even before we talk about shrinkage!
Your curl pattern aslo has a massive impact on what your style will look like. Forgetting the 2a's to 4c's because absolutely no-ones hair falls into just one of these, the majority of curly hair is a mixture, so you may have waves on the underneath and tighter curls on the top. If the hair is all cut to the same length when wet and then bounces up to different tightness of curls when dry you're going to get a very unbalanced look, this might look like longer straight bits popping out of the bottom or one side higher than the other.

So whats the answer?
A truly dry cut. I'm not talking about cutting the hair dry to start then finishing wet, im talking about a dry cut at the begining a wash and diffuse and a finish of the cut dry too. This way the hairdresser can truly see the way you wear your hair, the way your hair bounces and cut to each curl theres no scary lengths and no weird shapes!
I also need to add that your curl specialist has not only invested in their education but they work with many types of hair, myself included, have worked with 100's of peoples curls over the years, this has meant I have built up shed loads of experience with every curl possible.
As a curl specialist I am here to make your washday work for you and your life easier, the host of information I give you is tried, tested and tailored just for you.
You may also find your curls specialist. is open for you to drop them a message afteer your cut if you're struggling with a curly woe!
If you've ever experienced a dodgy cut book yourself in for a dry cut and i can guarantee you'll see the difference!
